Dark Earth (a collection of 9 haiku) by Freya Pickard

Dark Earth (a collection of 9 haiku)

sullen sea wrinkles

smooth wavelets caress the shore

calm before climax

backlit anvil cloud;

wind-swept occluded sky scape

dominates the bay

slow curl of breaker

rises opaquely, crashes

a ponderous sea

beech and haw mingle

terracotta leaves flutter

thorn remains naked

brazenly clustered

pure white against furry moss

below driven sleet

inked in dark, stark lines

hedge bones press against skyline

soft rain erases

bones of the dark earth

sharp-edged, jagged horizon

buffeted by wind

clustered starlings perch

define taut copper wires

communicating

northern wind persists

sunlight catches dark rook wing

hawthorn leaves shiver

Pushcart Prize nominee, Freya Pickard, is the quirky, unusual author of The Kaerling series, an epic fantasy set in the strange and wonderful world of Nirunen. A cancer survivor, she writes mainly dark fantasy tales and creates expressive poetry in order to leach the darkness from her soul. Her aim in life is to enchant, entertain and engage with readers through her writing. She finds her inspiration in the ocean, the moors, beautifully written books and vinyl music (particularly heavy metal and rock). She enjoys Hatha Yoga, Bhangra and Yogalates and in her spare time creates water colours and pastel drawings of the worlds in her head.
