Four Poems by Ursula O'Reilly

SHELTER

Who resides in that abode,

There upon the rise?

Ivy thick upon its walls,

Grass so glossy green?

Birds nesting high in trees,

Wild creatures shriek.

Whining breezes ramble,

Beside an ancient well.

‘Twas once a Goblin Den,

A shelter for The Folk.

Gathering place for pixies,

Hobgoblins and their kin.

Departed many ages since,

Left only legends there.

Where humans do not tread,

No mortal voice is heard.

EAGLE RISES

Eagle fearlessly rises,

On gigantic wings beating.

Strength in sinews surging,

Hesitant thoughts abandoned.

Visions of a new beginning

Gusting through his mind.

He revels in potent vitality,

As urgency of survival

Flows beneath wings extended.

Uncertainty, fear of failure,

Left in the dismal valley,

In driving storm and rain.

Sun in sharp eyes reflected,

He marvels at limits absent.

Soars above stormy valley,

Searching for a safer haven.

He circles languid, watching.

Descends, finds his landing.

GREATEST LOVE

Remove mask, look in the mirror.

Who is the stranger waiting there?

How long since you encountered

Self, beneath the makeup layer.

Reach out to the long-lost person.

Look the stranger in the eye.

Take her hand, travel with her.

Greet the one who understands.

Prepare for a new beginning,

With your principal confidante.

Encompass all concerns and burdens,

Everything that brought you here.

Take the stranger’s hand, embrace her.

Love the heart that holds you fast.

One who holds on through all battles.

Greatest love and truest friend.

FREE AS THE WIND

Wind lifting your wild hair,

Freedom pulses in your veins.

Ahead the highway stretches.

Foliage and watching birds

Witness your departure.

World weary spirit enfolded

In nature’s tender hands.

Not every wanderer is lost.

Your voyage continues.

You venture onwards,

Free as the wind
