Two Poems by Hilary Canto

ORIGINS

Identity, Identity

What’s it’s importance

Who am I,

Where did I come from?

What is it I seek

Is it my origin

Do I want recognition

Or need acceptance?

What is a label

What is a name

Is it not something

That people can blame?

Does the Sparrow know

That a hawk is a hawk

Will the whale feel heard

Any more than the bird?

Such angst in the mind

To be labelled and loved

Whilst true origin lies

In a place way above

With no body or mind

To get in the way

Identity’s no reason

To mess up this way

Go deep into heart

Feel that part

light of soul

Restores the whole

People and nature

Universe and earth

Beings connected

As one before birth

Origins beyond

A planetary home

Beings now separated

Feeling alone

Labels and names

Reinforce separation

Creating barriers

Through every nation

Why can’t we see

We’re one group of beings

One human race

One origin, one name

Race, culture, religion

Gender, sexuality

What’s truly affecting

our future destiny?

The planet cries out

destruction we’re causing

Minds anxious and fearful

Realisation dawning

What once was peaceful

Beautiful earth

Destroyed in a century

Of human births

Human minds, human needs

Ever increasing power and greed

Annihilation of a paradise home

Earths original species cry alone

Damned by destruction

Voices unheard

Save us they cry

Like the screams of birds

Labels can give

comfort inside

Yet won’t save lives

due to die

Can we return to

The home of our soul

To love, compassion

Honest and whole?

The hour is late

Identity ranges

divide minds

nothing changes

Origin, home

Has no identity

Peace and love is

One great entity.

UNSEEN MYSTERIES

Just because we can’t see it

Doesn’t mean we can’t feel it

Magic, Myth, and Mystery

Fascinating humans intrinsically!

Faeries, Unicorns

Dragons, Elves

Hobbits, Lord of the Rings

Enthrals with spells

Celtic lore, magical stories

Gothic tales much more gory

Adults close children’s imagination

Thwarting magical inspiration

Unicorns, Dragons,

Witches, Wizards

Grown-ups love

Mythical beasts, lizards

Harry Potter

Merlin, Narnia

bringing light

to adult paranoia

Reawakening the child within

Adults’ hearts can now sing

Suppression unlocked able to fly

Magic, Myth, Mystery now a high

Whoever said they don’t exist

Beings of magic, mystery, myth

Shame on them, cruelly denied

Listen, Feel, they’re all inside.
