Four Poems by Simon Kaeppeli

Valley Song

winter lives in these mountains
and visits the valley twice a year
ancient crowns are sold for songs
and cellars are paved with altar tiles

hope is reaped from barren fields
to feed a family of three
on a table set for four

wiry hands light a candle
to lead the pilgrims' way

dust gathering in tiny footprints

----

ink seeping
into
the paper
hungrily
swallowing up thoughts

----

as the raven settles
on a rain-soaked branch
quivering air
the window glass breaks the pale sun
into a rainbow

----

Realms Within

A fractured kingdom dwells in me
A hidden island, a cartographer's blind spot
All the winding roads to my soul
Submerged

A whisper from within, a quiet sigh
Like a secret held close to a lover's chest
Surrounded by empty shadows
Unmoving

Isolated in time, a suspended breath
Each day without words
A new, sharp-edged gem in my crown
Of Solitude
