Three Poems by Rachel Turney

Promises

Elven promises

Whispered on the wind

Floating like the leaves of two trees

One gold, one silver

This Life

We are all enshrouded

as we walk through this life

never to notice each part

of the world around us.

We are all blurred

as we walk through this life

never to see clearly things that

are so apparent in the past.

We are all connected

moving together through this life

always to be surrounded by others

and the beauty of each other and the things we have built.

In Good Company

I walk along the castle walls in this fairy tale city

I think about the characters of my childhood here with me

Talking quietly with Goldilocks over a glass of red wine in the main square

She’ll have some complaints and so will I … bears today, am I right

Contemplating art at the photography museum with The Big Bad Wolf

He’s pretentious but funny

Tidying the kitchen while Cinderella points out, “You missed a spot”

She reminds me of my sister

Making the bed with Snow White pulling the bottom sheet tight

She’s kind of a perfectionist, but I guess we have that in common

Eating a piece of cake from the local bakery at the table with Gretel

I don’t really enjoy the company of children, but I do love pastry

Sitting on the stones near the water I see The Little Mermaid in the distance breaching the waves and returning to the sea

I never speak with her, but I always like thinking of all of the other worlds out there

Cozy in my bed, I say goodnight to Little Red Riding Hood and maybe too to the Talking Cricket

Bonne nuit le Chaperon Rouge!

Buona notte Il Grillo Parlante!
