Conversations with My Father
These days we talk about the weather.
How much it snowed last night,
how the ice, like a zipper,
came off the windshield.
I give him all the office gossip
from co-workers he'll never meet
and when I describe the antics
of my backyard squirrels
his smile returns. We stopped
talking about pain meds
and doctors long ago.
He's only interested
in the important stuff.
