Five Poems by Tapeshwar Prasad

Hinged Upon the Void

I am a little perplexed
by your vintage image —
hung,
hinged upon the void;
it creaks
when I run
cockroach,
nocturnal
to your memory.

Upturn

I upturn
for you—
to let you glimpse my face
in an ancient bowl of remembrance.

From its worn crevices,
a golden bud begins to form,
to bloom—
fragile, luminous,
in its nascent light.

Lullaby for an Age

Take it:
the warmth of a mother -
the ancient verse of a lullaby;
the spirit of the father,
higher than worldly skies.

How can you swaddle
the language of poetry
without that warmth?

You, denizens of the modern world -
the Anthropocene, AI -
when you bellow your transhumanist voice
in the name of language and poetry,
all becomes dead
the moment it rolls out.

Say it not
to cut off my one leg -
covered under the fallen roof -
to rescue me; but
to save the mother
buried
under the debris of an earthquake.

Mandarin of its voice

Sweet whisper, drifting
from the thatched hut
deep within the misty woods -
after the toil of day;
like incense rising
from a lone censer,
the Mandarin of its voice.

Half Pence of My Happiness!

Who took
half pence of my happiness
but
the chatter of worldly men -
writing prose and poetry
I was so safe -
A recluse
in semi darkness
of my earthen lamp, silence and
elongating shadow
