6 Haiku 

cherry picking

a plastic beach bucket

under her belt 


Battleground museum

arrows point out musket holes

in a Ghost Dance shirt 


at the foot

of a roadside cross

glitter litter 


after the argument

the teddy bear asks her

to marry him 


 

name embroidered

on the Christmas stocking

new daughter-in-law


clearance rack dress

her husband likes

the price tag

 

1 Haiku Sequence

Fairy Ring

the shadows

of an untamed forest

mosquitos lair

mushroom safari

little brother

scouts ahead

stepping over

the fallen branches

a hunter’s song

deer tracks in mud

a congregation of morels

within reach

headed home

a future generation

left behind



 


Dr. Randy Brooks is Professor of English Emeritus at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, where he teaches courses on haiku, tanka, and Japanese poetics. He and his wife, Shirley Brooks, are publishers of Brooks Books and co-editors of Mayfly haiku magazine. His most recent books include Walking the Fence: Selected Tanka and The Art of Reading and Writing Haiku: A Reader Response Approach.
