Two Poems by Linda King

somewhere beyond reason

in this stalled season

there is not enough forest

to mark your way    you must

resign yourself to this lesser green

small hours    lullaby rain

your list of what’s been lost

grows longer   all that dazzling debris

more misery waiting in the next town   the downfall

of too much yearning      twilight and whiskey

is the new chemistry of hope    hanging on

to a line of persuasion    somewhere

beyond reason

space will replace all of you

there are no reliable witnesses

everyone speaks the language of loss

everyone in the crosshairs

lines drawn that can never connect

helter-skelter    homespun terror

on every street

scorched      and empty space

will replace     all of you

as if you were never there
