Three Poems by Jonathan Butcher

Spring Again

Flowers droop and daffodils drip with soiled dew,
dense like mercury; scrambling the minds of insects
and dog walkers alike. Trees of blossoms which tear
like faded gas bills, corrode into soil, creating rivers
of the slickest oil, undiluted by this relentless rainfall.

A burst of ferns and fauna, which spread spores
from flower beds to lungs, choking out any chance
of contemplation. A fragile sunlight teases with slivers
of warmth, yet succumbs to a constant eclipse,
which flickers like a cracked camera lens,
distributing stained negatives into shallow puddles.

This equinox without celebration,
daisy chains wrapped around nests no longer
occupied by hibernation. The walkways and subways
now overgrown with yellow grass and dock leaves.
and as todays shift slowly drags out once more,
Spring now fills this thickening air.

Always The Same

A falling timber crushes this already weakened
ground which we occupy daily; a ground
only crossed when avoiding this inevitable work
or dire friendships kept alive the convenience
of distance.

Our heads seem tied to these walls, our legs
tied up in nets of bones, which have now darkened
with age, the marrow now long evaperated,
as we struggle to determine from which body parts
they originate.

Any distractions by drinks and screens
no longer hold substance, it's far easier
to remain static in this inertia and boredom,
which now holds far more weight than escape,
and is slightly less expensive.

The Longing

Flags flown accidently
at half-mast;
a systematic cok-up of values.
A hammer taken to gravel, the remnants like
sweat drenched sand;
torn grass on the moors; flecks of blood in
cracked cups of Earl Grey.
