The Student's Tale

Whanne that the lange derke nihtes of Decembre

Supplaunted hath the reynes of Nouembre

Than the clerkes beginnen to lamente

Of houres in studiye they han spent

Quoth one, “Alas, and weylawey!”

“Must we reden thise textes today?”

“Feare nat,” quoth the maister, “thou mayst rede thy Chaucer

Whilst sippynge te fro thy coppe and saucere

So, now, thou mayst ben in a state of blisse

Whanne reding al thise aunciente miths.”
