Three Poems by CJ

To the statue by Rackham building that taunts me while I’m inexplicably high

Truly, there is cause for the pride you hold / as sure as the hand that erected you / out of marble and stone / and your unseeing gaze that disregards / us lowly, moving mortals / who could imagine such beauty / yet could never emulate / how the sun lends sheen to your ivory / all but impenetrable beneath / like a lover’s embrace / No, none of these bloody, fleshy things / that throb in our useless useless chests / i’m another perishable good / a thing that will too one day die / and we’ll then be in our rightful places / me, within the sweet-smelling earth / you amongst the sky

to Mama

SATURN IN OPPOSITION

Well, we got the most powerful device

in our drawers to see it -

this phenomenon in the sky

at its point in orbit nearest to Earth, as they say

A single white dot

Unremarkable, in the vastness of dark

I think I’ve witnessed more magic

As you knead dough between your fingers

In the hum of your breathing, a song that traverses

galaxies upon galaxies

HURRICANE WATCH

I was told

the shelters

have long filled

so I

once again

make home

to this desertion

treading blindly

to the tune

of sirens

like a song

guided by

tenacious winds

something rages

from beyond

intemperate

and

relentless

with a hollow

I recognise

as

my own

calamity takes

its ordained path

it seeks me

as I seek it
