One Poem & Ten Haiku by Jennifer Gurney

On This Crisp New Morning

on this crisp new morning

so early in the year

I still forget

to write the new year

at the top of each page

the world is cold

frozen over

light film of snow-ice

frosting the top edge

as if to say

not yet

don’t come out

not yet

stay inside

of your warm, cosey homes

sipping your hot coffee

warm by the fire

a little bit longer

the world will keep

chilled to the bare bones

by this ice frosting

while you simply

wake to greet

the new day

warm inside

and while part of me

longs for a sunny

bright morning

to venture outside

and seize the day

with a spring in my step

the other half

is grateful

for this gentle

awakening

Ten Haiku

I have found

a lifetime of joy

in an afternoon

***

when all else fails

I have you to talk to

full moon

***

I'm still

in the beginning

life story

***

as sun sets

moon rises

waking the night

***

there is no end

once I begin

river haiku

***

longing

for the first leaf

winter-spring

***

new leaves

all around me

January

***

Joni Mitchell

got it so right

skate away on...

***

what I wouldn't give

to have my eyes

on the horizon

***

thick fog

still hangs in the balance

uncolouring the day

***
