Four Poems by Lynn White

To Shape A Dragon’s Breath

The woman does not believe what she's seeing

as the purple dragon floats by

breathing rainbows

from flower filled puffs of breath.

It’s understandable.

After all,

this is not the usual sort of dragon

whose fire filled breaths register alarm.

But alarm registers,

nevertheless,

as this is not the usual sort of dragon

and no one knows

the shape of his next breath

and no one knows

how to shape it

safely.

Dreamscape

Soon the light will be fading

and the ravens are circling

like winged messengers,

a cawing cacophony,

harbingers of death

and confusion.

We try to make sense

of our once familiar place

searching in vain for the water

which we know we must find

and cross.

Searching

for something,

anything

to give us a bearing,

to help us find the river

in this dreamscape

of another world.

But perhaps

we have already crossed over.

Sleep

I’m hoping for the sweet dreams tonight,

ready to welcome them to my bed

like the tree welcomes its leaves.

But I cannot choose them,

cannot control them,

cannot prevent them

turning to nightmares

that wake me

screaming and sweating

night after night.

And I cannot choose

the time when the long sleep

takes me to my final bed

holding the flowers tight

in my boney hand.

The Place Where The Stars Are Buried

I’m on my way to the place

where the stars are buried

under a roof of rain.

I won’t get lost.

I’m following the silver snail

trails and the muddy pools

with the little shimmers of spangles.

When I get there - to the place

where the stars are buried.

I shall dig a little, dig

just enough to let

a glimmer of light out.

Just enough to let

the love sparkle and

sizzle in the light

before it burns.
