Three Poems by Ann Privateer

I Want It All

I awaken to the hope
And amazement of liberty
That refuses to quit.

I awaken to disaster
Of my bloody, broken dreams
Withering patiently.

I awaken to a storm
Feeling consumed by fire
That searches for love.

Once

I was hidden from even
Myself, sad but true, yearning
Had the upper hand.

If only friendship could win
But no, because I was locked
By my own self love.

I tried to break free of me
Not knowing the culprit
Was really myself.

How sad, how alone was I
An only child longing
For more chocolates.

Contrarian

I was born feet first
And I’ve been
A contrarian ever since

My church said don’t
See these movies
So I made sure

Those were the movies
I went to see, or don’t
Read these books

Those were my first
Choice, yes, sometimes
Are like that, me, me, me

I’ve been a contrarian
All my life, in this
Lifetime, it’s who I am.
