Haiku (5), Senryu (2) & Tanka (5) by Joe Sebastian

HAIKU

pond stillness
the swan’s call echoing
in the lake

clinging
to a withered branch
a raven’s caw

temple pond
the lotuses cradle
a young sun

ochre sea
a fishing boat melts
into the sun

Spring drizzle
a rainbow ripples
in the puddle

SENRYU

Ramadan
the prayer beads
worn smooth

late Summer—
all the flowers
losing their names

TANKA

autumn sunrise
a murder of ravens
flies off from tree shadows
the soldier packs
his rucksack again

plague year cabbage soup
simmer in the pot
the refugee family
in a whole new war
before  flying the coop

dusk settles into
the crannies of my dad’s home
i press my ears to
moss laden walls to hear
my lost childhood

stone Buddha
sitting still
on the gravelly path
yet my self becomes clearer
at its lotus feet

a trekking trip
to the mountains, climbing
slipping, i learn
to unlearn and relearn
what i took for granted
