April Is a Flibbertigibbet
April is in love with love.
She plans her wedding,
buys a dress of lace and voile.
She forgets to find a groom.
April gets a little drunk.
She runs off with the minister.
Mexico is their new home.
He forgets his wife and kids.
April doesn’t like to pray
or stay with baldness and a paunch.
A younger man makes April swoon.
She forgets the minister.
April’s home with Mom and Dad.
She would rather be a nun
until she falls in love with love.
She forgets she’ll never learn.
Who Would Guess
The sunrise behind
the aspen trees
turns the catkins
into pink blossoms.
The crocus flowers
burst bright purple
and yellow, the first
flowers in the garden.
The lilac bushes
bear new buds.
Spring is stretching,
ready to rise,
throwing back
winter’s blanket
of snow.
If not for Spring’s
demand for coffee,
I wouldn’t believe she’s here.
There She Goes Again
She’s a lilac child running through the hours with purple flowers. She’s a seed scatterer, a cocoon gatherer, a honeycomb full of butterflies, a thunder thrower. She hides her unpredictable moods behind clouds. She is sunshine, rainstorms, and winds that toss chaos to the moon.
Spring can’t stop
running after
Autumn’s leaves.
Stones
He built a wall
of stones to keep
his fragile heart
from mortal harm.
Spring sowed flowers,
birds’ melodies
to pry apart
his stony wall.
His heart was wrapped
in gentle winds
and fragrances
of newborn life.
Spring built a bed
for flowing brooks
from stones he used
to guard his heart.
His happy heart
bled tears of joy
that turned to streams
that watered Spring.
Sleepyhead
Spring braids her hair into trees.
Trees bloom flowers.
Flowers call for hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds flutter alarm clock buzz.
Wake up, sleepy Spring.
In a few months, Summer
will tuck you into bed.
