Ten Haiku by Joshua St. Claire

 




Ten Haiku



occluded front
opposing squadrons of pelicans
slow their approach



a shorebird flying
too far away to be identified
incoming storm



a mourning dove cooing
among dogwood blossoms
late snow



harrier liftoff
the frenzied screams of brown
creepers



rock paper scissors
three common ravens divebombing
a red-shouldered hawk



small white lady’s slipper
a snowy egret
becomes starlight



thermals
a black vulture traces
the rings of Saturn



peregrine falcon
an eastern cottontail reaches
the event horizon



arpeggios
and, yet, robinsong
dies in darkness



golden hour
a prothonotary warbler sings
sweet-sweet-sweet-sweet-sweet








Joshua St. Claire is an accountant from central Pennsylvania. His haiku have been published in Lothlorien Poetry Journal, Modern Haiku, The Heron's Nest, Frogpond, and Blithe Spirit, among others, and have been recognized in several awards and contests. His favourite subject is the sky.
