Four Poems by Madhu Gangopadhyay

The Lingering Fragrance

That duffle bag in the attic

Gasping under the weight of dust

Still holds your smell!

The other day I had opened it

Your body mist had spilled in it

The one you had bought,

On our last trip to Italy.

I always envied your taste!

My mind all muddled now.

Did you buy that for he liked it?

Yet you had rested your head

On my chest. I was lost in the fragrance!

Believe me, I didn’t realize my love had

Metamorphosed!

I wish I had trodden carefully

The bug could have been alive!

Alas, me and my Kafkaesque life!

Emptiness

The wind chimes made music

In the vacant balcony!

A wailing in fact.

Gone were those jolly

Stories, nothing kept intact!

The empty walls gaped,

The silent sighs of the abandoned house!

Trapped in the few cobwebs

On the stark white ceiling,

There were echoes many!

That summer eventide

In the southern high

When the wind blew hard

Bidding adieu to its people

Along with the deserted house

The sky too cried,

Bleeding menstrual red!

Parturition

And then amidst the clamour of prayers

And chittering of the birds

God bled!

And the pole star like the midwife

Brought out the child,

Night was born!

Aniline Dyed Heart

Your sighs in the stilled wind

The cumulus drew your face

On the cobalt canvas

I thought I heard that laughter

Macadam trapped!

A glistening dew in the corner

Of the eye,

Through blurred vision

A Skylark on its lone flight.

Barrenness haunts!

Dreams no longer

Walk hand in hand.

Those folklore lost

In abysmal nadir.

Savage pirate plundered!

Traces of the mayhem

The scent of sea weeds

Whisper.

dyed heart!
