eight short not poems
i know you are smiling
in the dark of night
of course i do
how could i not
dear nice you
it is ok to be an old man
and sit in this tree
two teenagers on e-bikes
laughing
wave at me
a text message from my child
who is nearly middle aged
i stop everything
and smiling
look at my phone
the loud straight couple blurt
‘we hate homophobia’
later i hear her say
‘we need a hetero Pride march
it shouldn’t just be for gays’
we spent most of the time
at the animal show
scratching a sheep’s head
each time we stopped
he nudged us hard
if i die from a heart attack
tonight or tomorrow
at least it wasn’t today
i suppose that’s something
life changed three years ago
it’s ok to do the exact same walk
every day and the ones to come
yesterday i altered it
but i won’t tomorrow
no fucking way
i have three ex-partners
still alive living their lives
and a thousand others in between
i learnt plenty
from that lot
