Four Poems by Ursula O’Reilly

OBJECTS

Inanimate things have no life,

But for life we give them.

Power to ignite memory,

Transport to a different time.

Evoke thought, induce emotion.

Possessions we collect affect

Understanding of who we are;

Existence in the present time.

We cling to objects to remind.

To capture solace, make us

Happier, comforted. Gift them

power they do not possess.

They are things, lifeless.

Merely objects. And yet,

Every one of us discerns,

Our items mean much more.

REFLECTIONS

Mirror, mirror, on the wall.

Standing still, judging all.

Mirror, mirror, on a hill.

Are my pieces broken still?

Mirror, mirror, by a stream.

Enraptured idle people dream.

Mirror, mirror, of the past;

Fitting puzzle pieces fast.

Mirror, mirror, of desire;

Flickering flames, healing fire.

Mirror, mirror, all alone.

Stormy pathways leading home.

Mirror, mirror, why so sad,

When reflection’s looking glad?

Touch my face, comb my hair;

Lion heart creased with care.

Mirror, mirror, one true friend.

Ever busy, ever kind.

GUESTS

Spectral party guests,

No mortal perceives.

Gaze at proceedings.

The well laden table

By a cheering fire.

Pace on dance floor,

Robed in fine attire.

Move and mingle

With people gathered,

Amused by chatter.

Interrupt conversation,

Unseen. Nobody

Observes them chuckle.

Spectral party guests,

No mortal perceives.

IRISH COFFEE

I thought of you

In a restaurant, as I

Savoured Irish coffee.

Trio of coffee, whiskey

And cold cream.

Recalling times when,

Carefree and young,

We each ordered one

And then another.

And another. One

Never enough on

Irish coffee days!

Sad you don’t

Savour Irish coffee

anymore.
