One Poem by Susan Tepper

Withheld

Sky strung poison

I discover your lips

hold strychnine

when standing on tip-toes

to give a kiss

long withheld—

These days & nights

I learned my heart is

unforgiving—

More than

the dangerous spittle

even dumb pigeons

know to step around
