A comic tangle of lettuce
pleading,
Oh! Let us alone!
the tomatoes
like the red pug nose
of a clown
the crusty jokes
of the croutons .
A befuddled professor
friends with Irwin Corey,
dreams of Imogene
eating his plate clean.
He mimics
a Frenchman
in a strange double talk
and leaves the Diner,
with a Chaplinesque walk
