Two Poems by J. S. Graham

To my friend, the famous magician

Call the daffodil as machine

to bring them cakes and chocolates

until they know the value

of pigs and squealing things

Friend. Are your spells sibylline?

Are they rutilant rebellious—

do they take you to the stratosphere?

Do you dine with Simon Magus—

on the morning of magicians—

the tiger is the magus, isn’t he?

Call the hyacinth as modem

to bring them cakes and chocolates

until they know the value

of pigs and squealing things

The Miracle Strip

Subterranean—incunabulum

Demiurge of the mountain

In swamp-land carnival

Sunken ziggurat of crab carcasses

Straining upwards unto heaven

With the language of the sea

Coruscate—disco ball—glow

for in your chthonic shadow

banshees dance and solve

the riddles of antiquity;

[belle dames and chiliasms]

—chasms—

and keys
