wildfires

glow behind 

the farmer's straw hut 

harvest moonrise

not as bright

 

5 o'clock shadow

the farmer rubs his chin

over stubble fields

sacrificial scarecrows 

feed the bonfire

 

 

desolation grows

as the air begins to cool

over withered grains

pointing fingers 

will not resolve

 

 

fleeting autumn

the stack of wood

slowly shrinking

in this energy 

crisis

 

closer

to understanding

the tattered lotus

how the pods stay

above muddy water

 

M. R. Defibaugh (b. 1985) is a Chesterfield, Virginia-based poet and haiku enthusiast who relies on a wheelchair due to the effects of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He has degrees in mathematical sciences (BA, University of Illinois at Springfield) and operations management (MS, University of Arkansas). He has appeared in numerous journals and other publications, including Cattails, Failed Haiku, Frameless Sky, Frogpond, Humana Obscura, Modern Haiku, Poetry Pea Journal, Prune Juice, Ribbons, Stardust Haiku, Take 5ive, The Zen Space, Trash Panda, Wales Haiku Journal, and Whiptail.

Christina Chin is a painter and haiku poet. 

She is four-time recipient of top 100 in the mDAC Summit Contests. They were exhibited at the Palo Alto Art Center, Califonia. 

She is the sole haiku contributor for the MusArt book of Randall Vemer's paintings published by ArtReach Publication, Portland, Oregon. 

1st prize winner of the 34th Annual Cherry Blossom Sakura Festival 2020 Haiku Contest.  

1st prize winner in the 8th Setouchi Matsuyama 2019 Photohaiku Contest and won two City Soka Saitama's 2020 haiku prizes. She is published in numerous journals, multilingual journals and anthologies including Japan's haiku monthly magazine, Haikukai (俳句界).
