Eight Tanka Poems by Uchechukwu Onyedikam

Tanka Poems

On plane thought sailing,

tap dance, clicking memories

luring the night's scene

jealous of the moon and stars

petals blooms in summer rain

Dark jar of secrets

brim full they might run over

you — who keeps the gate

seated idly man on guard

manning the night fade away

Behind this rich field

of honour, look, you will see

a man digging rows

herding his flocks on green lawns

naming his divine blessings

Seated in the dark

watching the frigid night smokes

panic off a blunt

as I listen to drum roll

giving praises to my toil

By virtue fall we

stand to rise from mortal coil

as we sail in grace

of heavenly melody

speaking life to the lifeless

In multi-coloured

dreams of passion I was placed

on drip to well up...

to rise above shackled dreams

and set down my agenda

Year of no Light we

glow in dark shadow's night-life —

sip on its madness

healing on its medicine

craving its touch and beauty

Even though I'm tossed

to and fro by troubled wind,

still planted in calm

yes, still singing hosanna

to the Highest who made you!
