One Poem by Susan Tepper

Country by Country

The deliverance is solemn.

A surprise.

I expected horns blowing

& bulls running riotous

through the neighbourhood.

But we are far from Spain.

From everywhere.

A landlocked mass

that will remain

until the reckoning:

A final familiar chime

heard country by country.

Here— a quick turn back

to simpler days:

Farm wives beating a gong

calling the men home

to supper.
