One Prose Poem by Ceinwen E Cariad Haydon

The Lady of the Lake

in Llyn y Fan Fach / my lady absorbed matrilineal wisdom / drank tinctures of stardust / wise / she swore she’d stay clear of men / moon’s ago / quietness lapped on mud-flat shores / her garden flourished / purple loosestrife / yellow flag iris / cream frogbit / and starry white bogbean / safe / until Gwyn wandered in / to seek a lost lamb / their eyes made promises ahead of minds / pheromones sang sex-smells / and they lay down / to cling and climax / cold night fell / stung my lady’s senses to protect herself / her words lilted in his ear / I will love you / Gwyn / but strike me once / I will surely leave you / she bore Gwyn three strong sons / lads / cushioned by kindness and kinship / yet / in time / her husband’s hand rose / struck her / his hand fell / his mouth had no time for sorry / his mind none for regret / she left / arrowed down / through deep-waters / to swim forever / in Llyn y Fan Fach’s inked depths /
